Ohio Window Tint Laws: What's Legal in 2026

Ohio sets clear limits on how dark your window tint can be, and the rules are different for the front and rear of your vehicle. Here's what's legal, what's not, and what to know before you book.

Tinted car windows parked in Ohio

Before you tint, it helps to know what Ohio actually allows. The state measures tint by how much light passes through the glass, and the limit changes depending on which window you're looking at.

How Ohio Measures Tint: VLT

Tint darkness is measured in Visible Light Transmission, or VLT. A 50% VLT film lets half the visible light through. The lower the number, the darker the film.

Ohio law sets a different VLT limit for each window on your vehicle, so a film that's legal on your rear windows may not be legal on your front doors.

Legal Limits for Passenger Vehicles

Windshield: Non-reflective tint is allowed on the top five inches of glass, or above the AS-1 line printed on the windshield. The rest of the windshield must let at least 70% of light through.

Front side windows: Must allow more than 50% of light in. That means a film darker than 50% VLT is not legal on your front doors.

Back side windows: Any darkness is allowed.

Rear window: Any darkness is allowed.

Reflectivity

Ohio also limits how reflective your tint can be on the front side windows. A mirrored or chrome-looking finish isn't legal up front, even if the darkness is within range. Rear windows have more flexibility.

Medical Exemptions

Ohio allows darker tint with a valid medical exemption for conditions such as photosensitivity, lupus, or melanoma. You'll need a signed physician's statement, and you should keep it in the vehicle.

What Happens If You're Over the Limit

Illegal tint is a fix-it situation. You can be cited and asked to remove or replace the film, and it can complicate a vehicle inspection. It's easier to get it right the first time.
